Sparkassen Puts Bitcoin in a 50 Million Customer App

October 20, 2026

News

Key Takeaways

  • Germany’s biggest banking group now sells crypto inside its own banking app.
  • DekaBank runs the trading and holds the keys, not the customer.
  • Each savings bank picks its own start date, so access arrives gradually.

What Just Happened?

Sparkassen is to Germany what the big four banks are to Australia: massive. Roughly half the entire country banks with them, around 50 million customers (TokenPost, 19 October 2026).

From 19 October 2026, customers at participating savings banks can buy and sell Bitcoin, Ethereum, XRP, Solana and Polygon inside the official Sparkasse app, under the name “Krypto powered by Deka”. DekaBank, the group’s securities house, provides the service, with custody run in cooperation with Börse Stuttgart (BTC-Echo, 19 October 2026).

No shady offshore exchanges. No 20-step verification headaches. Just your regular bank balance and a “Buy Bitcoin” button, at 0.99 euros per order plus a spread DekaBank’s own price information does not quantify (DekaBank price information, September 2026, via Cryptoticker). There is no nationwide switch, though. Another 30 to 40 institutions are expected to connect each month, with most interested banks targeted for the first half of 2027 (Cryptoticker, 19 October 2026).

Why Are They Doing It?

Two words: customer demand. DSGV board member Joachim Schmalzl said the decision came down to strong demand from customers and a now-reliable European regulatory framework (ChainCatcher, 20 October 2026).

Regular savers were sick of watching inflation eat their euros, and they were buying crypto in app-based brokerages rather than at their bank. German tax rules may also help, for now: gains on crypto held privately beyond a year currently fall outside § 23 EStG, though a Finance Ministry draft of 30 September 2026 would tax coins bought after 31 December 2026 as investment income regardless of holding period (Cryptoticker, 9 October 2026). That is German law, not Australian, so take your own treatment from a registered tax agent.

The Good vs. The Trap

  • The Good: gradual but massive adoption. Millions of everyday folks who were too intimidated by tech can now buy hard assets with a thumbprint.
  • The Trap: this is a closed-loop system. You get price exposure, but the bank acts as custodian, and delivery runs only to wallet addresses of certain approved crypto asset service providers. You cannot just send those sats straight to your personal hardware wallet (DekaBank product page, via Cryptoticker, 10 October 2026).

Sparkassen is not selling this as an investment, either. The DSGV still calls crypto highly speculative, warns customers of total loss, and says securities and savings plans remain its core business (ChainCatcher, 20 October 2026).

It’s another massive stamp of legitimacy for sound money. What matters is whose rules govern the asset: Ainslie Crypto holds Australian clients’ coins under Australian jurisdiction, with specialist institutional custodians including Zodia Custody, the digital asset venture backed by Standard Chartered and NAB.
