Blockchain Payments: From People to Machines

October 22, 2026

Key Takeaways

  • Early blockchain micropayments aimed at people paying people never reached mass use.
  • AI agents now buy data and computing from each other, paying per request.
  • The XRP Ledger is being built for that machine traffic, though settled value is still tiny.

Blockchain technology is evolving in a natural way, much like how early internet tools shifted from simple human messaging to today’s automated systems. Early experiments focused on people paying people in small amounts. Today, the focus is expanding to machines paying machines.

A clear early example was Coil. Founded in 2018, Coil tested streaming micropayments for online content until the service closed on 15 March 2023 (U.Today, 24 January 2023). Users paid a small monthly fee of US$5, and the system automatically sent tiny amounts to creators as people read articles or watched videos (Ripple Xpring, 15 August 2019). It relied on fast, low-cost transfers, often involving the XRP Ledger (XRPL) via the Interledger Protocol. This showed that blockchain could handle high numbers of very small payments between humans more efficiently than traditional banking systems. While it proved the idea worked technically, widespread everyday use remained limited.

Now the needs are changing. Artificial intelligence systems and software agents increasingly buy services from each other such as data, computing power, or analysis without a person in the middle. These machine-to-machine micropayments require the same speed and low cost, plus reliable settlement and trust between programs that have never interacted before.

The XRP Ledger is adapting to support this shift and prepare for much higher future volumes. Its core design already delivers transfers in 3 to 5 seconds at a base cost of 10 drops, or 0.00001 XRP, a fraction of a cent (XRP Ledger docs, viewed 22 October 2026). Recent upgrades include an EVM-compatible sidechain, live on mainnet since 30 June 2025, that expands what developers can build while keeping XRP as the native gas asset (Ripple, 30 June 2025). Partnerships, such as Yellow Network’s Clearnet layer announced on 27 October 2025, add layers for fast off-chain clearing of trades and interactions through state channels, with only final settlement recorded on the ledger (Yellow Network, 27 October 2025). Dedicated tools and hubs for AI agent payments are already processing millions of small transactions: the XRPL AI Hub had recorded more than 14.5 million agent payments across 174 registered merchants when viewed on 22 October 2026 (XRPL AI Hub).

The value behind those transactions is another matter. The same hub shows about US$27,700 settled in total, averaging well under a cent per payment, which says the plumbing works rather than that a large economy is running on it yet.

Together, these steps position the XRPL to handle growing machine-driven activity alongside traditional uses. The technology is moving from proving human micropayments are possible to building infrastructure ready for an automated economy of continuous, high-volume machine settlements. Investors may be missing the scale of what is happening right in front of their noses. XRP is one of the digital assets quoted by Ainslie Crypto, which holds client crypto with specialist third-party custodians.

This evolution also reflects Reed’s Law: when network participants can easily form groups and interact in many ways, value can grow exponentially, in proportion to 2^n for a network of n members (Reed, Harvard Business Review, February 2001). With software agents able to join and transact in far greater numbers than people, the possible combinations multiply rapidly. Critics including Andrew Odlyzko argue the law overstates network value, because human cognitive limits mean far fewer groups form than the maths allows. By preparing the XRP Ledger for these high-volume machine interactions, the network is positioned to capture that expanding potential.
