Agentic Payments: The Race to Power AI Commerce

July 30, 2026

News

Key Takeaways:

  • AI agents are starting to pay other AI agents directly, without a human in the loop.
  • An open standard called x402 lets software settle payments inside a normal web request.
  • Base leads on volume today, while Solana, Stellar and the XRP Ledger build for what comes next.
  • Most agentic payments settle in stablecoins, keeping value steady while the machines transact.

The next evolution of blockchain is no longer about people sending digital assets to one another, it is about AI agents paying other AI agents. This emerging “agentic economy” enables autonomous software to purchase APIs, data, compute, and digital services without human intervention. At the centre of this shift is x402, an open HTTP payment standard that allows software to negotiate and settle payments as part of a standard web request.

How fast is the agentic payment economy growing?

Over the past 12 months, x402 has become one of the fastest-growing standards for machine-to-machine payments. Public blockchain analysis has identified almost 159 million x402 settlement transactions across seven supported blockchains, representing more than US$41 million in settled value (source: agenteconomy.to, as of 30 July 2026). While independent researchers caution that a significant portion of these transactions are experimental or internally generated, the growth highlights the rapid development of infrastructure designed specifically for autonomous AI commerce.

Why is Base the current market leader?

Base, a layer 2 built on Ethereum, has emerged as the early market leader. Public trackers attribute more than 100 million x402 settlement transactions to Base, which crossed that milestone in the first quarter of 2026 (source: agenteconomy.to, citing Crypto Briefing). Most payments are settled using USDC, making Base the largest production environment for agentic payments today.

Where does Solana fit in?

Solana has become another significant player thanks to its high throughput and low transaction costs. The ecosystem supports a large and growing base of active agent wallets and meaningful payment volume, with numerous teams building AI payment infrastructure using x402 and related protocols.

How is the XRP Ledger approaching agentic payments?

The XRP Ledger (XRPL) is taking a different approach by targeting enterprise adoption. Ripple introduced its XRPL AI Starter Kit, released in June 2026, which combines x402 support with developer tools, AI wallet skills and Model Context Protocol (MCP) integrations, including integrations with the Claude API. Rather than building the payment protocol itself, Ripple adopted T54’s reference implementation of x402 for XRPL, enabling AI agents to automatically pay for services using either XRP or RLUSD, Ripple’s US dollar-backed stablecoin.

T54 also operates the XRPL x402 Facilitator, which verifies blockchain payments and authorises service delivery. In the weeks after launch, the XRP Ledger recorded roughly 1.43 million autonomous agent transactions and merchant settlements across a small but growing group of merchants (source: Coinspeaker, 23 July 2026). Ripple has since joined the x402 Foundation under the Linux Foundation, positioning XRPL within a broader ecosystem of trusted AI-to-AI commerce.

What about Stellar?

Stellar is pursuing a similar strategy, combining low-cost payments, stablecoins and x402 support while attracting developers through dedicated AI hackathons.

Although no single blockchain has secured long-term dominance, Base currently leads in transaction volume, Solana continues to grow its developer ecosystem, and XRPL is differentiating itself through enterprise-grade payment infrastructure. Together, they represent the foundations of what could become blockchain’s next major growth sector: an economy where autonomous AI agents transact with one another as seamlessly as computers exchange information today.

What it means for investors

The agentic economy runs on stablecoins and public blockchains, and it is being built by some of the largest names in payments. For investors, the signal is less about picking a single winning chain and more about the direction of travel: digital assets are moving from speculation toward genuine payment utility. Gold Silver Standard applies the same tokenisation thinking to hard assets, backing digital tokens with allocated bullion.
